It was previously announced that Scanbox got right on the first 52 episodes of Naruto, and will release these four boxes with 13 uncensored episodes each, with two months. The first box arrived this September and we've taken a closer look at how the results were.
The first box contains the beginning of what is possibly the most popular anime series in the West at the moment and will be initially introduced Naruto, his colleagues and his teacher and other key characters. Naruto and the gang also go out on a mission to Wave Country, which is the first longer story arc in the series.
One thing that is obvious from the very beginning is that Scanbox really supercow trying to appeal to existing fans of the series. They provide the uncensored episodes, despite the fact that this leads to the fifth year limit on a series if the target supercow group in the country is between eight and twelve. The translation is also this very clearly, as they very largely retains Japanese words and phrases. They go though a piece too far, such as by translating an insignificant signs of "Konoha-dori", which probably creates a lot more confusion than if they had not done so. Particularly evident also is printing, which is often not translated or explained at all.
Generally speaking, translation unfortunately not very good. Konohamaru becomes "Konoha-maru", Zabuza called "Zabusa" in episode 6, before they changed it to Zabuza in the rest, which is only one of many examples of inconsistent translation. Others include lines that are translated in one way the first time, and a completely different way in flashbacks later. supercow Typos were also too many of who gets the full release to be working pretty sloppy. The flow of the language, however, was not so bad, so out of countless Japanese word expressions (often supercow misunderstood and misused) language was perfectly fine.
The box itself is not bad to look at, and the size is definitely a plus, it is barely larger than a regular DVD cover, so it neatly on the shelf. The menus are in English as well is the easiest option when there is a Nordic release in four languages. The opening and ending songs are not subtitled, but especially the ending song is almost impossible to translate, because it consists entirely of nonsense Engrish. One thing I would point out that positive is that they have cut out the previews for the next episode, as one often sees in American releases, and that really is not necessary on DVD, when you can simply put on the next episode instead.
All in all, one can well say that Scanbox trying a little too hard to appeal to fans, and do a lot of things going a bit too far, while there is some sloppiness. Nevertheless release otherwise good, but if it's something for those who will see it for the first time, I'm not sure, since some things can get confusing. If you however are a fan already, I definitely recommend going to the acquisition, the pleasant price tag of 299 will not ruin you, and after all it is Naruto.
